THE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

A place to inspire, explore & learn in early childhood.

ADE has developed program standards in line with research-based best practices in early childhood development and education. Program standards are implemented and used to ensure the highest quality educational and therapeutic approaches when working with young children.

RELATIONSHIPS

Our program promotes positive relationships between all children and adults to encourage each child’s sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a community and to foster each child’s ability to contribute as a responsible community member.

PROGRAM &
CURRICULUM

Our program implements a curriculum that is consistent with its goals for children and that promotes learning and development in each of the following areas: social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive.

TEACHING

Our program uses a variety of developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and effective teaching approaches that enhance each child’s learning and development in the context of the program’s curriculum goals.

ASSESSMENT

Our program uses a variety of formal and informal assessment approaches to provide information on children’s learning and development. These assessments occur in the context of reciprocal communications between teachers and families, and with sensitivity to the cultural contexts in which children are developing.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Our program promotes the nutrition and health of children and protects children and staff from illness. Our centre meets and exceeds government health and safety protocols, policies and recommendations. We consult with leaders in health, sustainability, and nutrition when creating centre policies and programs in order to offer the highest safety standards in the industry.

STAFF COMPETENCIES, SUPPORT & ETHICS

Our program employs and supports a teaching and administrative staff that have the qualifications, knowledge, and professional commitment necessary to promote children’s learning and development and to support families’ diverse needs and interests.

FAMILIES &
COMMUNITY

Our program establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with each child’s family to foster children’s development in all settings. Our program establishes relationships with and uses the resources of the children’s communities to support the achievement of program goals.

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT

Our program effectively implements policies, procedures, and systems that support stable staff and strong personnel, fiscal, and program management so all children, families, and staff have high-quality experiences.

CENTRE FACILITY

Our program ensures a safe & healthy environment by providing appropriate and impeccably maintained facilities, continuous improvements, and quality-control measures.

PROGRAM PRINCIPLES

ADE’s preschool program is designed around six basic principles, based on the latest research
in early childhood education and Quebec's government ministry standards.

Inclusive education provides diverse learning opportunities for all children

Inclusive education benefits everyone involved by encouraging friendships amongst all children, modeling positive behaviors, and setting higher expectations for children with or without disabilities.

Each child is unique

Our team is highly skilled and trained to respect each child’s individuality and own pace of development. Our educators apply their specialized knowledge in child development to their classroom practices.

Children are active agents in their development

Our classrooms are designed to encourage child-led and natural learning, with the guided support of their educators.

Child development is a holistic & integrated process

Learning takes place across all areas of development, at different points in time. We focus on the main areas of child development: social, emotional, moral, cognitive, language and motor (physical).

Children learn through play

Our program allows children to have many opportunities for free play and structured activities, individually or in a group setting.

Collaboration between the school & parents to encourage child development

A strong relationship between school and home is key for a child’s healthy development and successful integration into the preschool program.

DEVELOPMENTAL COMPETENCIES

We understand child development as multiple domains that contribute to a comprehensive whole.
Our holistic approach to early childhood education focuses on promoting each domain of child development, slowly building on specific and global skills to promote each child’s overall development.

MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

Young children achieve mastery of their bodies through self-initiated movement. Children have various opportunities to practice emerging skills in coordination, movement and balance, and perceptual–motor integration.

EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Children have many opportunities to develop a sense of competence and positive attitudes toward learning, such as persistence, engagement, curiosity, and mastery.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

All children have varied opportunities to engage throughout the day with teaching staff who are attentive and responsive to them and who facilitate their social competence and their ability to learn through interacting with others.

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Children need a variety of opportunities to develop competence in verbal and nonverbal communication by responding to questions; communicating needs, thoughts, and experiences; and describing things and events.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

Curriculum for cognitive development includes key areas: literacy, mathematics, science, technology, social studies, health and safety, and creative expression and the arts.

7:00 AM TO 9:00AM

ARRIVALS & CHILD-DIRECTED PLAY

Children begin to arrive at the centre for their day at preschool. Children can explore their classroom and participate in developmental learning centres set up in each room.

9:00AM

BREAKFAST

Children enjoy a nutritious homemade breakfast from our seasonal menu, prepared in our kitchen by our in-house chef. Breakfast typically consists of a glass of milk, oatmeal & fruits, homemade muffins, and other delicious meals.

9:30AM

CIRCLE TIME & MORNING MEET UP

Children sit around a table, or on the carpet to participate in turn-taking and discussions related to the week's learning goals and monthly theme. Children of all age groups learn to wait their turn, raise their hand when they would like to speak and master the art of listening during their morning meet-ups.

10:00 AM

MORNING LESSONS & ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Preschool teachers run daily morning lessons and activities, which are planned monthly based on the upcoming themes and weekly classroom targets. Preschool lessons and activities are based on weekly concepts, including: literacy, French language, STEM, socio-emotional, sensory, and art & music workshops.

11:00AM

GROSS MOTOR PLAY

Each morning, children participate in daily gross motor activities, targeting important motor skills. Our early learners head outdoors into our play-yard each morning for outdoor and gross motor play. Our pre-kindergarten group participates in indoor gross motor activities in the mornings, and outdoor activities every afternoon.

11:30AM

LUNCH TIME

Preschoolers enjoy a delicious hot lunch prepared daily by our in-house chef, in our very own kitchen. Children join their peers at the table in their own classrooms to eat their lunch. Teachers explain what foods the children are eating each day, encouraging children to eat independently (and helping when needed!) and to try new foods.

12:30 PM TO 2:30PM

NAP & REST PERIOD

Children take the time to rest and relax from their busy preschool morning. Teachers create a calming environment, promoting rest and relaxation by reading a story, playing calming music, and turning off the lights in the classroom. Children are encouraged to rest on their individual sleep mats, with their favourite soft toy and blanket from home. Pre-kindergarten children take a shorter nap, ending nap-time at 2:00pm.

3:00PM

AFTERNOON SNACK

Once children have cleaned up after nap-time, and used the washroom, they sit down at the table as a group for their afternoon snack. Children enjoy a healthy afternoon snack prepared by our chef, in our very own kitchen.

3:30PM

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS & OUTDOOR PLAY

Our early learners participate in afternoon workshops, based on the developmental target of the day. Our pre-kindergarten group heads into the play-yard to participate in gross motor games and outdoor play.

4:00PM TO 6:00PM

DEPARTURES & CHILD-DIRECTED PLAY

The children's preschool program comes to an end and parents begin to pick them up. Children who stay after the preschool program can participate in child-directed free play in the classrooms.
